My name is Starr, I use they/them pronouns, and I am the radiant voice behind Black Feminist Vegan. (Hey!!! Thanks for being here!)

I am an educator, writer, activist and food justice organizer from Northern Virginia.

My vegan journey began abruptly in August 2017, and BlackFeministVegan came to life just three months later. I noticed a huge gap in existing vegan media that complicated a Black feminist’s (or Black person’s) ability to see veganism as an intentional, necessary, revolutionary practice.

How I Am of Service

So, in an effort to fill that gap, I started out in this game where I plan to end — as a Black feminist voice of veganism, and a vegan voice of Black feminism.

My essay on “Food Justice and Race in the U.S.” was published by Sanctuary Publishers in Food Justice: A Primer. This essay reflects on the role and ability of social constructs to legitimize environmental injustice.

My goal is to provide people with the perspective and the resources to make intentional choices that realign our actions with our ancestral values.” – Starr Carrington

I’m a lead community organizer for Fuel the People which is space for intentional community building that amplifies Black/Brown narratives, perspectives, lived experiences and liberation movements for a more consistent vegan journey.

My Intention for This Online Space

While your journey to transitioning within a vegan lifestyle is a challenge, the choice to align with vegan values is a simple one.

Your transition to a vegan lifestyle requires you to choose intention, reshape values, and maintain accountability.

This space is here to alleviate and support all of the struggles I experienced throughout my transition, but also here to be creative in order to address your unique experiences.

From the quick tips I provide to the in-depth analyses I share, you’ll notice that this site values our wellness as Black & Brown people- our ability to thrive, in peace, in health, in community, unconditionally – as a form of active resistance.

And I’m here to support you on every unique step of the way.
